NTPC Limited is planning to enter the coal gasification segment with a target to produce 5–10 million tonnes of synthetic natural gas annually over the next three to four years.
The project is expected to begin development in FY2027, will use high-ash domestic coal sourced from NTPC’s captive mines. The synthetic gas will be utilised at NTPC’s gas-based power plants and sold to external consumers. NTPC will soon issue tenders for technical consultancy and may collaborate with Coal India Limited and other public sector enterprises for technology development.
