Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (Mahagenco) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to jointly develop nuclear power generation projects in the state.
With this, Maharashtra has become the first state to partner with the central government under its nuclear-based power initiative.
India currently operates 25 nuclear reactors with 8,880 MW of capacity and has eight reactors under construction. Ten additional reactors with 7,000 MW of planned capacity are in the pipeline. The central government has also allocated Rs 200 billion for the development of small modular reactors to support the growing demand for round-the-clock clean energy.
