Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Power has commissioned its first grid synchronisation test with the West African Power Pool (WAPP).
The four-hour trial marked the first unified and harmonised operation between Nigeria’s national grid and the interconnected West African regional grid. The synchronisation test aligned grid frequency, phase, and voltage across Nigeria and the WAPP system. This allowed seamless cross-border electricity flow between Nigeria (including Niger, and parts of Benin and Togo) and other member countries such as Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali, Guinea, the Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. This is the first sustained integration effort since a short-lived seven-minute trial in 2007. The Nigerian Ministry of Power credited the milestone to enhanced investments in monitoring infrastructure, disciplined grid operations, and improved coordination between regional National Control Centres. The development signals a major step toward deeper energy cooperation and cross-border power trade in West Africa.
