South Africa’s National Energy Regulator (NERSA) has approved a market operator licence for the National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) and adopted new grid capacity allocation Rules and established the Electricity Market Advisory Forum.
The new licence allows NTCSA to function as both market operator and system operator during the transition period, while remaining a subsidiary of Eskom Holdings. However, final issuance of the licence is subject to submission of an “independence roadmap” by NTCSA to address potential conflicts of interest stemming from Eskom’s shareholding.
