TCN commences rehabilitation of Afam IPP 132 kV transmission lines

Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced rehabilitation works on two key 132 kV transmission lines in the Port Harcourt region to improve power evacuation and grid reliability.

The rehabilitation covers the 38.6 km Afam Independent Power Plant transmission line and the 20.8 km Afam IPP–Elelenwo 132 kV double-circuit line. According to a statement issued by TCN management in Abuja, contractors have been formally mobilised to undertake reconductoring works following a handover ceremony.

TCN said the 12-month project has been necessitated by the ageing condition of the transmission infrastructure, which has resulted in a gradual decline in wheeling capacity over time. The reconductoring works are expected to restore and enhance the operational performance of the lines.

The utility noted that the two transmission lines are critical for evacuating bulk power generated from the Afam power plants into Nigeria’s national grid. Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly improve the reliability and stability of electricity supply in the Port Harcourt region and adjoining areas.
