Reportedly, NTPC Limited is planning to develop a coal-to-synthetic natural gas (SNG) project at Talaipalli in Chhattisgarh with a capital investment of around Rs 100 billion.
The project is proposed to utilise high-ash domestic coal from NTPC’s captive mines and is part of the company’s broader strategy to advance coal gasification and reduce dependence on imported fuels. The proposed facility will have an SNG production capacity of about 0.5 million tonnes per annum and is expected to be spread over nearly 150 acres. It will consume around 2.5 million tonnes of coal annually sourced from NTPC’s Talaipalli mines. The technology selection for the project is expected to be finalised by the last quarter of the financial year 2025–26.
