The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has approved first pour of concrete (FPC) for the construction of units 5 and 6 of the Kaiga nuclear power plant in Karnataka.
The approval follows completion of the safety review for the indigenous 2×700 MWe pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) design against AERB safety requirements. The project will add two 700 MWe units at the Kaiga site in Uttara Kannada district where four 220 MWe PHWR units are already operational.
