TNERC approves 1,500 MWh BESS projects in Tamil Nadu for RTC renewable power supply

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has approved three bidders for battery energy storage system (BESS) projects aggregating 1,500 MWh in the state.

The approved projects, with a total power capacity of 400 MW, will be developed to store surplus renewable energy and support round-the-clock (RTC) green power supply. Eagle Infra India Limited and OPG Power Generation Private Limited have each been awarded 175 MW of standalone BESS capacity, while Onward Solar Power Private Limited will set up a 25 MW system. The projects will be implemented under the build-operate-transfer model for 12 to 15 years, with viability gap funding support, and are expected to help reduce dependence on coal-based generation by enabling daily storage and discharge of surplus renewable power.
