Asit Kumar Mukherjee Director (Projects), West Bengal Power Development Corporation

Asit Kumar Mukherjee is a veteran power sector professional with over four decades of extensive experience in thermal power generation, project execution, operations and maintenance, and strategic leadership. He has held pivotal roles in India’s largest power utility and state power development organisations. He served at NTPC Limited for nearly 37 years in various senior operational and project leadership roles, ultimately rising to the position of regional executive director — Eastern Region I until his retirement on January 31, 2021. In June 2021, Mukherjee joined West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited as director, projects. In his current role, he has led the completion of the Sagardighi 1×660 MW supercritical unit in record time, setting high industry benchmarks for execution and commissioning efficiency under prevailing sector conditions.

During his career, Mukherjee has developed deep domain expertise in areas central to India’s thermal power fleet, including the execution of large-scale thermal and supercritical power projects, operations and maintenance of high-capacity generating assets, and the turnaround and crisis management of stranded or underperforming projects

According to Mukherjee, India’s power sector is at a crucial stage. It is undergoing a structural transformation with rapid growth in solar, wind and hydro capacity; an increasing policy push toward decarbonisation and energy transition; and rising electricity demand driven by industrialisation, EV adoption and urbanisation.

Among Mukherjee’s most memorable assignments was the Barh Super Thermal Power Project (5×660 MW), one of NTPC’s key supercritical projects. At a time when the project faced significant execution and operational challenges, his decisive leadership and structured governance approach were instrumental in stabilising and steering it toward successful outcomes. His efforts earned widespread recognition within NTPC and across the broader Indian power sector.

Mukherjee maintains a strong interest in technological advancements in power generation and infrastructure management. He is known among peers for his disciplined work ethic and commitment to professional excellence, traits that have defined his long and impactful career.

An electrical engineer from the National Institute of Technology, Durgapur, Mukherjee has earned widespread acknowledgement for his capability to drive project completion, turnaround performance and operational excellence.
