AERB approves excavation work for Mahi Banswara units 1 and 2

The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has approved the start of excavation activities for units 1 and 2 of the Mahi Banswara Rajasthan atomic nuclear power project.

The project is being developed by Anushakti Vidyut Nigam Limited, a joint venture between Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and NTPC Limited, to build, own and operate nuclear power plants in the country. The excavation approval follows the site consent issued to NPCIL in May 2025 for units 1 to 4 of the project, which was subsequently transferred to Anushakti Vidyut Nigam Limited in September 2025. The units 1 and 2 will each have a capacity of 700 MWe and will use pressurised heavy water reactor technology.
