T. V. Surya Prakash is a distinguished power sector professional with over 35 years of experience in Andhra Pradesh. He started his career in 1986 as an assistant engineer with the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board.
In his current role as director, operations, Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL), he oversees power distribution operations across 11 districts, leading a workforce of about 9,115 regular employees and nearly 4,900 outsourced personnel. His responsibilities include ensuring 24×7 reliable and quality power supply, effective customer service and high operational preparedness under both normal and emergency conditions.
He plays a key role in managing the increasing complexity of distribution operations driven by renewable energy expansion. His portfolio includes the implementation of national flagship programmes such as PM Surya Ghar and PM KUSUM, feeder‑level renewable integration, development of battery energy storage systems, expansion of electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and coordination on regulatory matters.
Prakash observes that the Indian power sector has progressed beyond basic electrification into a phase where grid management, power quality and system stability have emerged as the most critical challenges. From a distribution standpoint, issues such as bidirectional power flow, voltage fluctuations, harmonics and ageing infrastructure are now routinely encountered at the feeder level, demanding continuous operational focus and experienced decision‑making.
Some of the most defining phases of his career were during major cyclones and flood emergencies. He led large‑scale power restoration efforts during cyclones such as Hudhud, Montha, Titli, Fani, Jawad, Asani, Mandous and Fengal, as well as during the Godavari floods. His leadership during these crises earned him widespread appreciation from the public, the administration and within the organisation.
Known for his calm, field‑oriented approach, Prakash is a trusted leader. He follows a participative, example‑driven management style, firmly believing in “let us do it” rather than “I say, you do it”, while remaining closely connected to ground‑level operations.
Prakash holds a BTech degree in electrical engineering from JNTU and an MBA from Osmania University, combining strong technical expertise with extensive field and managerial experience.
