Coal India Limited plans to set up coal-to-syngas production facilities at pithead locations or adjacent to end-user industries such as fertiliser plants, direct reduced iron units and gas-based power plants.
The company has already initiated steps under the National Mission on Coal Gasification to enhance domestic feedstock and chemical security. It has floated an expression of interest to develop coal-to-syngas projects on build-own-operate or build-operate-maintain basis. Under the proposed model, syngas hubs may be established at Coal India mine pitheads to supply multiple industrial consumers through pipeline networks. Alternatively, facilities may be located adjacent to a single large consumer such as a power plant, fertiliser unit or direct reduced iron plant to ensure dedicated supply.
