APSPDCL shifts government electricity services to prepaid smart metering system

The Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) has introduced a prepaid smart metering system for government electricity services.

The initiative covers government offices, educational institutions, municipal corporations, public water works and street lights across nine districts of Andhra Pradesh.  As part of the rollout, APSPDCL credited around Rs 150 million to e-wallets associated with 34,496 government electricity connections. Under the prepaid model, government departments will be required to pay both fixed and energy charges in advance at the beginning of each billing cycle. Electricity consumption charges will be deducted from the available balance on a daily basis. The utility will issue alerts via text messages and email when the balance falls below a prescribed threshold. Power supply will be disconnected automatically if the balance reaches zero.
