Qara Energy, an Egyptian energy and infrastructure company, in alliance with High Dam for Electrical and Industrial Projects Company (Hydelco), has secured the first and third phases of a major 500 kV transmission project being tendered by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, to connect wind generation projects in the Gulf of Suez region—a region recognised for its high wind speeds—to the national grid.
The project involves the construction of about 350 km of 500 kV ultra-high-voltage transmission lines linking wind power generation facilities in the Gulf of Suez to the Hawamdiya substation in Giza Governorate. The scheme is one of Egypt’s largest electricity transmission infrastructure projects, and is expected to enable the national grid to absorb more than 2 GW of renewable energy, supporting Egypt’s strategy to increase the share of renewable energy in its generation mix.
