TotalEnergies, a France-based multi-energy company, together with South African independent power producer Hydra Storage Holding and investment holding company Reatile Renewables, has inaugurated the 216 MW Hydra solar photovoltaic (PV) project co-located with a 500 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in South Africa.
Located in the Northern Cape province, the hybrid facility is claimed to be the largest of its kind in Africa. The project will supply 75 MW of dispatchable electricity to South Africa’s national grid between 5:00 and 21:30 under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with state-owned utility Eskom. While TotalEnergies and Hydra Storage each hold a 35 per cent stake in the project, Reatile holds the remaining 30 per cent.
