Ghana’s GRIDCo accelerates 161 kV Anwomaso–Kumasi line upgrade

Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Ghana’s national transmission utility, is accelerating the upgrade of the 161 kV Anwomaso–Kumasi (K1-K2) transmission line, a project that will increase electricity transfer capacity to Kumasi from 364 MW to 1,000 MW.

The existing transmission line, which has been in service for more than 30 years, is being replaced to meet growing electricity demand and facilitate the evacuation of power from new generation units in the Kumasi area. The project involves dismantling the existing transmission line and constructing a new 161 kV line along the same corridor, as developing a new route was considered more costly and disruptive.
