Electricity Mid-Year Update 2026, IEA Report

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released its Electricity Mid-Year Update 2026, assessing the evolving global power sector against the backdrop of the energy market disruptions arising from the conflict in the Middle East. The report projects continued robust growth in global electricity demand in 2026, supported by higher industrial consumption, increasing use of appliances and cooling equipment, expansion of data centres and the broader electrification of end-use sectors.

The report updates the outlook presented in the IEA’s Electricity 2026 report released in February, incorporating revised data for 2025 and updated forecasts for 2026 and 2027. It examines trends in global electricity demand, generation across different fuel sources and CO2 emissions from the power sector. The assessment also provides an overview of recent developments in key electricity markets, including China, the European Union, India and the US, alongside an updated assessment of wholesale electricity prices across major markets.
