NTPC plans to implement a pilot project at its Simhadri thermal power station to assess indigenous iron-air battery technology for long-duration energy storage applications. The project will be implemented by Atal Incubation Centre – Anna University (AIC-AU) through its technology partner Meine Electric.
The pilot will test the battery system under utility-scale operating conditions, focusing on its technical performance, operational reliability and operating characteristics. The project is expected to generate operational data and technical insights on the suitability of iron-air battery technology for long-duration energy storage. Meine Electric will undertake the development, system integration and performance monitoring of the battery system. The findings from the pilot are expected to support further technology development and provide a benchmark for future commercial-scale deployment.
