China’s SGCC unit installs 1,000 kV GIS at Haiyang West switchyard

State Grid Shandong Electric Power Company, a subsidiary of China’s State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), has completed the installation and withstand voltage testing of all 1,000 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) equipment at the Haiyang West substation in Shandong province, supporting the scheduled commissioning of the 1,000 kV Yantai–Weihai ultra-high voltage (UHV) alternating current (AC) project.

Withstand voltage testing involves applying a high AC or direct current (DC) voltage – often 1,000 to 5,000 volts or more – to an electrical device’s insulation for a short time, and therefore checks if the insulation safely blocks current and prevents shocks or fires.
