Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), Saudi Arabia’s principal electricity buyer, has signed four storage service agreements for the first group of battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects, with combined investments exceeding USD1.16 billion.
The four projects will provide a combined capacity of 2,000 MW/8,000 MWh, with each facility able to store electricity for four hours. Three 500 MW/2,000 MWh projects have been awarded to a consortium comprising Saudi Energy, ACWA Power and Al Sharif Contracting and Commercial Development Company. These are Al Muwyah BESS independent storage provider (ISP) and Haden BESS ISP projects in the Makkah Region, and Al Kahafa BESS ISP project in the Hail Region. The 500 MW/2,000 MWh Al Khushaybi BESS ISP project in the Qassim Region has been awarded to a consortium comprising ENGIE and Haji Abdullah Alireza & Company Limited.
