MoP plans power procurement schemes for gas-based projects

The Ministry of Power (MoP) is planning to launch two schemes to procure 4,000 MW from stranded gas-based power plants. One of the schemes entails procuring 2,000 MW from gas-based plants through auction and bundling it with an equal capacity of solar power. Under this scheme, the solar capacity will be given priority to operate and gas-based capacity will operate at times when solar power is not available. The other scheme proposes procuring 2,000 MW from gas-based power plants through an online reverse auction where bids would be submitted by developers based on incentives to be provided by the central and state governments to reduce end-use tariffs. Currently, a draft cabinet note is under preparation for both the schemes.
