Nuclear energy added in revised energy roadmap for the Philippines

The Department of Energy’s (DOE) revised energy roadmap for the Philippines will include the development of nuclear energy capacity.

This will increase renewable energy targets under the clean energy scenario. DOE has conducted the first consultation of the Philippine Energy Plan (PEP) 2023 to 2050 which includes the reference scenario and the clean energy scenario. The reference scenario will be based on previously established RE targets. Meanwhile, the clean energy scenario will support the entry of additional capacities from nuclear energy and the reutilising and retiring of coal facilities. Under the reference scenario, the share of RE in the country’s total power mix will be increased to 35 per cent by 2030 and to 50 per cent by 2050. Additionally, 10 per cent of all road transport will be electric vehicles (EVs) by 2040. Under the clean energy scenario, the share of RE will be increased to 35 per cent by 2030, 50 per cent by 2040, and more than 50 per cent by 2050. Additionally, the two choices for offshore wind will be included in this scenario. The first choice will offer a lower capacity of 19 GW and the other choice will offer a higher capacity of 50 GW by 2050. For nuclear energy development, the clean energy scenario calls for a total capacity of 1,200 MW by 2032, 2,400 MW by 2035, and 4,800 MW by 2050. The share of EVs in road transport is targeted at 50 per cent by 2050 while the share of biodiesel is targeted at 5 per cent by 2025.
