Mozambique’s Songo–Matambo transmission line obtains AfDB grant

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a grant of USD33.3 million for the Songo–Matambo electricity transmission line project in the Tete province in west-central Mozambique.
The project entails the construction of a 400 kV single-circuit line from Songo to Matambo spanning 118 km. The line will cross the site where the future Cataxa substation will be built to integrate the planned 1,500 MW Mphanda Nkuwa hydropower plant, which will be located on the Zambezi River in the Marara district of the Tete province. The line will comprise selfsupporting steel mesh overhead towers carrying a horizontal conductor configuration with an energy transport capacity of 2,300 MW. The project also involves expanding the Songo substation to extend the 220 kV busbar and installing a new 600 MVA, 220/220 kV phase-shift transformer to regulate grid flows and a 3×200 MVA, 220/400 (300) kV step-up transformer. The current 3×200 MVA, 220/400 (300) kV transformer will also be refurbished. The Matambo substation will be expanded and a new 400 kV feed supply to the new 400 kV Matambo extension built to integrate the 400 kV line from Songo.
