Rajasthan increasing net metering cap for rooftop solar from 500 kW to 1 MW

The Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission (RERC) has announced an increase in the cap on net metering for rooftop solar installations from 500 kW to 1 MW. This decision, made through a suo motu order, aims to promote the adoption of rooftop solar systems across the state.

The decision falls under the purview of the state’s Grid Interactive Distributed Renewable Energy Generating Systems (DREGS) Regulations, 2021. These regulations cover various aspects, including net metering and net billing arrangements, for renewable energy systems connected to the grid. They apply to systems operating behind the meter and in parallel with distribution licensees’ grids, with eligibility determined by the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020. The move aligns with the directives outlined in the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Amendment Rules, 2021, issued by the Ministry of Power. These rules mandated state electricity regulatory commissions to determine the capacity for net-metering arrangements. The RERC’s decision reflects compliance with these regulations and signifies a step towards facilitating greater solar energy integration into the grid.
