Arun Kumar Sinha, an alumnus of MIT Muzaffarpur, is currently member (technical) at the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC). A power sector professional, he has nearly four decades of experience across diverse areas of the power sector. He began his professional journey in 1984 as an assistant executive engineer at the then Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB) (now Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited [BSPHCL]), where he went on to serve in different capacities over the years.
Sinha has more than 10 years of experience as an operation and commissioning engineer at the Muzaffarpur Thermal Power Station, along with over four years in the operations and maintenance (O&M) of the Tenughat Thermal Power Station.
From 2007 to 2012, Sinha served as joint secretary of the then BSEB, as well as in the additional capacity of first public information officer (PIO). DurÂing his tenure there, he was recognised as the best PIO of the state for two consecutive years by the chief minister of Bihar.
Following this, Sinha served as general manager-cum-chief engineer in the Transmission Zone, Patna, for two years, where he played a key role in the commissioning and construction of several infrastructure development works in various towns and cities of Bihar of the state.
From 2015 to 2018, he served as general manager-cum-chief engineer at the Barauni Thermal Power Station. During its commercial operation in 2016, he was instrumental in bringing back the 110 MW Unit 7, which had been closed for the preceding 10 years. As director (technical) at Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited from 2018 to 2023, he was in charge of the power management cell at BSPHCL, which manages Bihar’s power portfolio on behalf of its discoms. He also chaired the Technical Coordination Committee meetings of the Eastern Region Power Committee during 2021-22.
Sinha has participated in various notable workshops, programmes and seminars, including a graduate engineers’ training course in the O&M of thermal power stations under the Power Engineers Training Society, Durgapur; a management development programme conducted by XLRI, Jamshedpur; a study trip to Tokyo, Japan, under the Indian government’s Clean Coal Technology Transfer programme; and a programme on the Nordic Power Market in Oslo, Norway.
