Afghanistan and Uzbekistan sign major electiricity investment agreement

The minister of mines and petroleum of Afghanistan and the energy minister of Uzbekistan have signed an agreement to implement four major electricity transmission projects.

This is one of the several memoremdum of understandings entered into by the two countries, including a dozen investment agreements valued at USD1.4 billion and 23 trade agreements worth USD1.1 billion to strengthen economic ties between the two sides and significantly boost trade. The projects outlined in the power transmission agreement are:

  • Construction of the new 260-km, 500 kV Surkhan (Uzbekistan)–Pul-e-Khumri (Afghanistan) line with 215 km in Afghan territory
  • Expansion of the Kabul Arghandi substation to 800 MVA capacity
  • Extension of 220 kV lines from Bot-Khak to Nangarhar in Afghanistan
  • Expansion of the Sheikh Misri substation by 130 MVA

These projects are expected to significantly enhance the capabilities, and electricity transmission improve infrastructure performance, electricity supply and reliability in Afghanistan, benefiting thousands of customers.
