Nigeria unveils advanced SCADA systems to improve power grid efficiency

The Nigerian government has announced the installation of advanced supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems aimed at revolutionising the management of Nigeria’s national power grid.

The new SCADA systems allow for real time monitoring and control, leading to quicker reactions to power outages and better load management. Funded by the World Bank, the project is a component of the wider Nigerian electricity transmission access project, aimed at upgrading the nation’s energy infrastructure. Under this, SCADA systems have been installed at more than 100 substations, including the Lagos substation in Apapa and over 3,000 km of fibre optic cables. A dedicated team has been established to prevent previous errors and ensure successful deployment. In addition to enhancing grid resilience, the initiative aims to bring in private sector funds and encourage creativity in the energy industry, leading to a more eco-friendly and effective power supply system nationwide
