Kyrgyzstan to build substations for electricity export to China

The government of Kyrgyzstan is preparing to build substations that will facilitate the export of electricity to China via the 200 kV Tamga– Karakol and 500 kV Kemin–Torugart high voltage power transmission lines.

Kyrgyzstan’s president announced this on December 22, 2024, during an event marking the 90th anniversary of the country’s electricity industry. The president also announced the completion of the substations and transmission lines under the Central Asia-South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade Project (CASA-1000) which will facilitate electricity exports to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Additionally, new solar and wind power plants are being constructed in Kyrgyzstan to further boost the country’s energy infrastructure. To encourage investment in the energy sector, the Kyrgyz government has introduced a range of incentives. These include tax breaks, preferences, financial guarantees, and the option to set electricity prices in foreign currency. These measures aim to create favourable conditions for attracting foreign investments into the country’s energy sector.
