Sanjeev Gupta, Director – Technical and Projects, Hartek Group

India has had a strong year in the power sector, focusing on renewable energy and infrastructure. The country has added record amounts of solar and wind energy, commissioning over 10 GW of renewable projects annually to meet green energy targets. With 204 GW of total renewable capacity, India is advancing towards a sustainable energy future.

Initiatives like the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme and Green Energy Corridors have improved grid connectivity and efficiency. However, challenges such as grid integration, discoms’ financial issues and renewable intermittency remain. Despite this, India’s energy transition is progressing, with growing private sector involvement in energy storage, smart grids and decentralised solutions. The Hartek Group has contributed to this transition by working on over 10 GW of solar grid projects.

India’s power sector faces major challenges. Despite reforms, discoms struggle with high aggregate technical and commercial losses and delayed tariff revisions, affecting their power procurement and the entire value chain.

Another key challenge is grid modernisation to support increasing renewable energy. “We at the Hartek Group are already working on this by building smart substations and energy-efficient solutions. With stakeholders and technology, we will make the power sector grow alongside India’s sustainability”, he adds.

India is poised for significant growth in the power sector, driven by government targets, policies and technology. The 2030 energy roadmap targets 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity, with a focus on achieving 50 per cent renewable energy by deploying grid-scale batteries and using green hydrogen for decarbonisation. Emerging technologies such as offshore wind and floating solar, along with smart grids, will enhance efficiency and resilience.

As per Gupta, one of the most rewarding projects he worked on at the Hartek Group was setting up Punjab’s first 220 kV substation for a leading commercial and industrial customer. Simultaneously, Hartek is rapidly increasing its footprint in the renewables industry by strengthening the grid for projects across key renewable energy states, handling capacities up to 765 kV.
