Egypt is set to float a tender in the latter half of 2025 to select a global consultancy firm for upgrading its electricity interconnection with Jordan.
The initiative aims to expand the existing transmission capacity from 500 MW to 2 GW. The current power exchange is facilitated through a 400 kV submarine cable installed between the two countries in 1999. As part of the new phase, the selected consultant will be responsible for conducting comprehensive technical assessments to support the planned capacity enhancement. This upgrade is a component of a broader regional power integration effort involving eight countries, namely, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Libya, Turkey, and Palestine, underscoring Egypt’s strategy to position itself as a regional energy hub. Meanwhile, Egypt is also advancing a separate 3 GW interconnection project with Saudi Arabia, valued at approximately USD1.8 billion.
