KERC notifies KERC (Karnataka Electricity Distribution Code) Regulations, 2025

The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has notified the KERC (Karnataka Electricity Distribution Code) Regulations, 2025 to govern electricity distribution activities in the state and align with national power sector mandates.

The Karnataka Electricity Distribution Code 2025 introduces detailed standards on metering, grid connectivity, power quality, communication systems, cybersecurity, and safety protocols. A key focus is the integration of renewable energy and distributed energy resources such as rooftop solar, battery energy storage systems, electric vehicles, and demand-side management. It restricts power quality disturbances like flicker within international IEC 61000 limits and enhances coordination requirements with small and captive generating units. The code is structured into three parts; the distribution planning code outlines design norms to support a reliable, smart, and sustainable network. The distribution operation and maintenance code sets procedures for grid reliability and service continuity. The safety standards section makes distribution licensees accountable for implementing Central Electricity Authority compliant safety measures. Implementation of the code will be carried out by distribution licensees. Bangalore Electricity Supply Company will periodically review the code, with any revisions requiring KERC’s approval.
