Amit Jain, CEO & Country Manager – India and MD – Renewables & Batteries for India & Southeast Asia at ENGIE, brings over two decades of experience in the energy and water sectors, having led both start-ups and large organisations. Since joining ENGIE in 2018, he has focused on accelerating the company’s renewable energy footprint across Asia, the Middle East and Africa. In India, he leads a team of over 200 professionals and has grown the renewable portfolio to over 2.3 GW, with plans to scale further.
Jain is deeply committed to sustainability and innovation, playing a key role in advancing India’s energy transition. He oversees ENGIE India’s strategic direction, project development and partnerships, supporting the company’s long-term vision of a carbon-neutral future.
India’s renewable energy sector has gained significant momentum, surpassing 220 GW in capacity with a record 30 GW added in the past year. This growth reflects both scale and increasing ecosystem maturity. Jain notes that strong alignment between government policy, private investment and clean technology is driving a robust pipeline of projects, including hybrid and storage-integrated solutions.
However, challenges remain. Integrating variable sources such as solar and wind into the grid while maintaining stability and affordability is complex. Large-scale energy storage is critical, but faces high costs and slow deployment. Still, initiatives such as standardised power purchase agreements are boosting revenues.
The outlook of the renewable segment in India remains very strong, both in terms of scale and strategic importance. Jain sees India’s 500 GW renewable energy target as a bold step toward energy independence. With favourable policies, a healthy investor appetite and technological advancement, he believes the country is well-positioned as a global leader in clean energy.
One of Jain’s proudest moments was leading the commissioning of ENGIE’s 200 MW solar plant in Raghanesda, Gujarat, during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic – delivered ahead of schedule with zero cases of infection and over 30 million safe man-hours.
He believes in transformational leadership and driving change through vision, collaboration and purpose. “Leadership isn’t about control, but empowering people to reach their potential,” he says.
