West Bengal government to set up 660 MW thermal power plant at Durgapur

Reportedly, the West Bengal government has planned to set up a 660 MW supercritical thermal power plant at Durgapur under the public-private partnership model.

The state government has written to the West Bengal Electricity Regulatory Commission (WBERC) seeking approval for the project, after which a global tender is expected to be floated post-Durga Puja. The project will be developed on unused land of Durgapur Projects Limited. It will be structured on a revenue-sharing basis through tariff-based competitive bidding. The government will provide land and common facilities such as ash ponds and coal handling plants, and ensure coal linkages with Coal India Limited. The selected developer will invest in setting up the plant, while the entire generation will be procured by the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited under a long-term power purchase agreement.
