Egypt and Greece sign MoU for 3,000 MW subsea interconnection project

The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, Greece’s Anexartitos Diacheiristis Metaforis Ilektrikis Energiasis and Elica Interconnector, a subsidiary of Copelouzos Group, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance the proposed Egypt–Greece electrical interconnection project.

The agreement covers the completion of technical and economic studies for the subsea high voltage direct current cable, which will span 950 km and connect Egypt’s planned 9.5 GW of renewable energy capacity to the Greek grid. The interconnection will have a transfer capacity of up to 3,000 MW. A portion of the transmitted electricity will supply Greek industries, while the remaining power will be exported to the wider European grid. The project has been recognised by the European Union as a priority electricity interconnection initiative.
