Reportedly, Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited (TNGECL) is set to deploy a 2,500 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) to manage rising peak-hour electricity demand and integrate surplus solar power.
The initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden of high-cost power purchases during evening hours and enhance grid reliability during summer peaks, which are expected to exceed 22,000 MW. Under the plan, TNGECL will soon float a tender for 1,500 MWh of battery storage capacity to be installed in Madurai, Coimbatore, and Trichy. The installations will be developed on Tamil Nadu transmission corporation lands adjacent to substations, following recent approval by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission to lease the land for BESS deployment. Once operational, the systems will store up to 2.25 million units of solar energy during the day and discharge it over a four-hour window in the evening.
