The Central Electricity Authority’s General Review 2025, incorporating data for 2023-24, highlights the continued expansion of India’s power sector across capacity addition, generation and consumption. As of March 31, 2024, the all-India installed capacity of utilities stood at about 442 GW, led by thermal power at over 243 GW, followed by renewables at around 144 GW, hydro at nearly 47 GW and nuclear at 8.18 GW, while captive capacity crossed 80 GW. Gross electricity generation by utilities reached about 1,734 TWh during the year, with thermal sources accounting for the bulk, although renewable energy generation excluding large hydro recorded strong growth over the past decade. Per capita electricity consumption increased to 1,400 kWh in 2023-24, reflecting rising demand from industrial, domestic and agricultural consumers, which together accounted for over 80 per cent of total consumption. The review also notes that overall power system losses remained at about 17.6 per cent, with variations across regions, while transmission and distribution infrastructure continued to expand in line with near-universal village electrification and growing electricity access nationwide.
