Piyush Pandya Senior Vice President – BESS, Engineering Excellence and Operations, IndiGrid

Piyush Pandya began his professional career with AEC (now Torrent Power) and has worked with reputed organisations such as Reliance Infrastructure and CLP India Private Limited (now Apraava Energy). Since 2020, he has been associated with IndiGrid Limited. Overall, he brings 32 years of experience across conventional and renewable power generation and transmission. Currently, he serves as senior vice president – BESS, Engineering Excellence and Operations at IndiGrid.

According to Pandya, India’s power sector is rapidly evolving in scale, complexity and innovation, driven by the twin imperatives of energy security and the climate agenda. The generation mix is steadily shifting from fossil fuels to non-fossil/renewable sources, primarily solar and wind, to accelerate the development of a low-carbon energy system. With the Electricity Act, 2003 and policy reforms, participation has expanded beyond central and state entities, and private sector investment has played a major role in sector growth. Looking ahead, the focus is on enabling a secure energy transition – integrating renewables with storage, enhancing grid flexibility and stability, and making the sector future-ready.

As per Pandya, much of the distribution infrastructure is ageing and is increasingly under pressure to accommodate rapid changes such as rooftop solar integration and growing electric vehicle adoption. The sector also continues to face high technical and commercial losses, which weaken the financial viability of discoms and limit their ability to invest in network upgrades. On the transmission side, project timelines are frequently impacted by right-of-way challenges, land availability and supply constraints.

One of his most memorable assignments in recent years was the development and commissioning of the first utility-scale BESS project in Delhi. The project was a first-of-its-kind battery storage deployment, involving new technology, an innovative financing model and end-to-end challenges from concept and engineering through execution and commissioning. Pandya follows a participative and consultative approach – encouraging open discussion, seeking inputs from the team and then making decisions based on merit and data.

Pandya graduated with a BE in Electrical Engineering from Saurashtra University in 1994. He also holds a postgraduate diploma in Human Resource Manageme
