CIL steps up production to meet increasing coal demand

Coal India Limited (CIL) has stepped up efforts to meet the increasing coal demand in the backdrop of low hydro, renewable and nuclear power generation. CIL’s supply to power plants stood at 35 million tonnes (mt) in September 2017 compared to 29.1 mt in the corresponding period last year. The company witnessed a growth of 21 per cent in offtake and 19 per cent in rake loading during September 2017. Owing to shortage, coal imports increased by 9.5 per cent to 18.33 mt in September 2017 vis-à-vis 16.73 mt in September 2016.
