Siemens and Orascom to rebuild power plants in Iraq

Siemens and Orascom Construction have signed an agreement with Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity to rebuild the Baiji 1 and Baiji 2 power plants aggregating 1.6 GW in capacity in the northern part of the country. The projects will power the country’s biggest refinery and deliver electricity to thousands of homes. Siemens will supply four new SGT5-2000E gas turbines, and inspect and revamp the six existing ones. The company will also provide two 400 kV and one 132 kV substations, along with generators, auxiliaries, automation and control systems, and related electrical equipment. In April 2019, Siemens signed an implementation agreement with Iraq’s Ministry of Electricity for rebuilding the country’s power sector. Under the implementation agreement, the two agreed on the award of contracts valued at around Euro 700 million for Phase I of the project.
