As per the Vietnam’s energy ministry, Vietnam is purchasing electricity from energy plants built by Lao and Vietnamese investors. Till 2025, Vietnam will purchase 3,000 MW of electricity from Laos at a price of 6.95 US cents per kWh. It is expected that the amount of electricity sold to Vietnam will rise to 5,000 MW between 2026 and 2030, with the price to be re-determined. Recently, National utility Vietnam Electricity signed three memorandums of understanding to buy power from Lao companies. Vietnam will start importing power from the 84 MW Nam Yeuang hydropower plant and the 300 MW Nam Phan coal-fired thermal power plant in 2024 and 2025.
