The total installed capacity has increased at a compound annual growth rate of 6.67 per cent from 223 GW in March 2013 to 399.5 GW in March 2022. Thermal capacity had a share of 59.1 per cent followed by renewables (27.5 per cent), hydro (11.7 per cent) and nuclear (1.7 per cent) as on March 2022.

In terms of ownership, the share of central and state sector in the total installed capacity has declined over the last 10 years. Meanwhile, the private sector’s share has increased, and dominates with a 49 per cent share as on March 2022.
