Reportedly, the West Bengal government is undertaking a modernisation initiative for three thermal power plants, with a total investment of Rs 24.5 billion.
The Sagardighi plant will be modernised at a cost of Rs 16.1 billion, the Bandel plant for Rs 6.5 billion, and the Kolaghat plant for Rs 1.9 billion. In addition to these upgrades, the government is planning new generating units at Bakreswar, Sagardighi, and Durgapur. Tenders are currently underway for two thermal power units of 800 MW each at Sagardighi, a 660 MW unit at Bakreswar, and another 660 MW unit at Santaldih. Furthermore, renewable energy projects are being prioritised, with work in progress for a 12.5 MW solar unit in Purulia, along with plans for 20 MW solar units at Sagardighi and Santaldih, and a 10 MW unit at Bakreswar. The state is also planning a 1,000 MW hydro-electric power plant in Purulia.
