South Africa’s newly-created Department of electricity and energy (DEE) has outlined its strategic targets for the 2025-30 period, calling for the procurement of 22 GW of renewable energy capacity and the addition of 5,044 km of power transmission lines.
After being separated from the Department of mineral and petroleum resources, DEE commenced independent operations on April 1, 2025. This followed the president’s 2024 decision to separate the two departments. DEE unveiled its vision for the sector to lawmakers at the portfolio committee on electricity and energy on April 23, 2025, declaring its plans to increase the installed renewable base from 11 GW to 33 GW by 2030, with local content in these projects rising to 60 per cent.
