Namibia and Angola to fast-track Baynes hydropower project

Namibia and Angola have agreed to fast-track the long-delayed Baynes hydropower project during a bilateral meeting in Luanda, reaffirming their commitment to the project and regional cooperation.

The joint hydropower project will expand access to clean and stable electricity in both nations. Namibia’s Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy has presented a NAD56.3 million budget proposal for the development work of the hydropower station. The activities to be funded by the proposal include technical assessments, transmission planning, dam design, and supporting infrastructure. Angola and Namibia had signed the implementation agreement for the project in November 2024. The Baynes project, situated on the Cunene River approximately 48 km downstream of Epupa Falls, involves the development of a 600 MW hydropower dam to be shared equally between the countries, along with the construction of a 400 kV transmission line with 275 km in Angola and the remaining 175 km in Namibia. The dam will operate at full capacity during the rainy season and optimise.
