IFC extends development funding for Mozambique’s Chimuara–Nacala project

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) will provide development funding to support phases II and III of the Chimuara Nacala transmission line in Mozambique.

The 460 km transmission corridor is being developed by Gridworks, a subsidiary of the UK’s development finance institution, British International Investment in partnership with Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM). The USD 400 million project’s phases II and III includes the 272-km, 400 kV Alto Molócuè Namialo line, 98-km, 220 kV Namialo Nampula line, and 90-km, 220 kV Namialo Nacala-à-Velha line, along with two new substations at Namialo and Nacala-à-Velha, and expansion of the Nampula substation. Construction of Phase I has already been completed by EDM. IFC’s contribution for the remaining two phases includes partial of development costs and technical support to funding ensure adherence to IFC’s Environmental and Social Performance Standards. It will also help mobilise broader project financing for the multi-phase, privately financed independent transmission initiative.
