Sri Lanka approves Norochcholai–Wariyapola transmission project under long-term grid plan

Sri Lanka has approved the Norochcholai–Wariyapola transmission development project, a key component of the Ceylon Electricity Board’s long-term transmission plan for 2025–34.

The project aims to strengthen the national transmission backbone to integrate over 750 MW of renewable energy potential from the Wayamba/North Western region. It will also facilitate the evacuation of variable renewable power from the Puttlam area, reduce transmission surcharge congestion, and enhance overall grid stability. The project cost is estimated at LKR 24.06 billion and will be financed through Sri Lanka’s mid-term budget, with support expected from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
