Hitachi Energy to expand ultra-high voltage manufacturing footprint in China

Hitachi Energy is set to expand its manufacturing and engineering footprint in China to support the country’s rapid build-out of ultra-high voltage transmission infrastructure and rising electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence-led data centre growth and large-scale renewable energy integration. The expansion forms part of the company’s USD 9 billion global investment programme and will see capacity additions across key industrial hubs including Xian in Shaanxi province, Xiamen in Fujian province and Chongqing. The manufacturing capacity is being significantly increased at its Xian base, which supports the world’s first ultra-high voltage flexible direct current project, with a focus on strengthening long-distance transmission corridors linking renewable energy bases in western China with high-demand eastern load centres. The expansion also reflects efforts to deepen local manufacturing and enhance supply chain resilience while advancing green and digitalised grid technologies aligned with China’s 15th Five-Year Plan for 2026–30.
