PFBR at Kalpakkam attains first criticality and clearance from AERB

The 500 MWe Prototype fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) has attained first criticality, marking a key milestone in India’s nuclear energy programme after receiving clearance from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).

The reactor was designed by Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research and built by Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited. The project is significant for India’s three-stage nuclear power programme, as fast breeder reactors are designed to produce more fissile material than they consume and are expected to play a bridging role between the current fleet of pressurised heavy water reactors and future thorium-based systems.
