Siemens commissions ±320 kV HVDC link connecting Pugalur in Tamil Nadu to Thrissur in Kerala

Siemens Limited, in association with a consortium of Siemens Energy, Germany and Sumitomo Electric Industries Limited, Japan has commissioned a ±320 kV HVDC link to connect Pugalur in Tamil Nadu to Thrissur in Kerala.

This project was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on February 19, 2021. It has now started with its commercial operations. It is the first high-voltage direct current (HVDC) link in India with voltage-sourced converter (VSC) technology. The 2,000 MW electricity transmission system is expected to support Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (Powergrid) to improve grid stability and resolve issues of power deficit in the southern region of India.
