Uganda releases new energy transition plan

Uganda’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has unveiled its Energy Transition Plan (ETP), a detailed 108-page roadmap created in partnership with the International Energy Agency.

This comprehensive plan outlines Uganda’s journey towards ensuring universal access to modern energy by 2030, while laying the foundation for sustainable and secure energy until 2050. The ambitious plan envisions Uganda achieving net zero emissions in its energy sector by 2065, with a major focus on expanding its solar capacity to 45 GW by 2050. The country aims for 75 per cent of its energy supply to come from clean sources like solar, geothermal, nuclear, and hydropower by 2050. This growth is projected to support a significant increase in electricity generation from 5 TWh today to 200 TWh by 2050. Under the ETP, Uganda plans to substantially increase its installed generation capacity, expecting nearly a 40-fold rise by 2050.
